The first home run of MLB season included lots of snow and one slide

The snow flurries and brisk 32-degree temperature in Detroit made for an interesting Opening Day first inning of the Tigers-Indians game – particularly for Miguel Cabrera.
In the veteran first baseman’s first at-bat of the 2021 season, Cabrera ripped an opposite field home run just inches over the yellow line in right field to give Detroit an early 2-0 lead over Cleveland. But Cabrera evidently didn’t realize he smacked his 350th homer with the Tigers as he slid into second base. The hit off of reigning American League Cy Young winner Shane Bieber had ricocheted off the small green fencing above the wall, which left Cabrera unsure if the ball cleared.
Cade Cunningham, almost inarguably the best player in the East this season, is likely out for the remainder of the regular season. That’s the word out of Detroit following the depressing news that Cunningham punctured a lung when he took a knee to his side Tuesday from Washington’s Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.
