The father and daughter accused of starting a fire that destroyed two occupied Summerside homes and damaged a third will have their matter heard before a provincial court judge in a trial.
Terrance Roy Wilson, 47, and Hannah Hayden Savannah Callaghan, 19, appeared by video from jail Wednesday morning when entering their not guilty pleas. Their lawyers were in the courtroom with Chief provincial court judge Krista MacKay.
Each has been charged with three counts of arson with disregard for human life and three counts of arson causing damage to property for the fires that began on Oct. 4 last year on Belmont Street.
Callaghan is facing additional charges for breach of an undertaking, possession of incendiary material, and another charge for a separate incident. She pleaded not guilty.
Wilson also faces additional charges, but his legal aid lawyer asked that he wait to enter pleas to those until after the trial.
No trial dates have been set, but the Crown and both defense lawyers will meet with the judge next month to sort out who needs to be summoned to testify at trial.
The Crown told Judge MacKay there are 19 possible witnesses to the October fires.
Wilson and Callaghan are both being held at the Provincial Correctional Centre, but they can’t have any contact with each other.
On Wednesday the pair appeared from separate video rooms at the jail but could see each other on the call and took the opportunity to say hello and comment on how good the other looked before being interrupted by Judge MacKay, who reminded them they could be charged if they did not stop.
”I love you, Dad,” Callaghan said.
”I love you too,” Wilson replied.
