While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments are still arriving at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.
The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 156 million payments valued at $372 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 25 million payments, with many of those directed toward millions of Social Security recipients, who have reached out to CBS MoneyWatch with concerns about delays. The holdups prompted the House Ways and Means Committee to send letters to the IRS and Social Security Administration asking about the payment delays to Social Security, Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement Board benefit recipients. Their prodding of the federal bureaucracies appears to have paid off.Primaries in different parts of the country on Tuesday could exert some influence on Republicans' chances at gaining back ground from Democrats in November and help decide whether an often unpredictable House Republican who has upset members of her own party will make it to the general election. A blistering heat wave that recently brought record-breaking temperatures to large sections of the southwestern United States, including several major cities, is forecast to continue this week as it tracks over much of the country on its way toward the East Coast.
