State plans to procure 70 lakh tonnes of paddy this Rabi season: Uttam
HYDERABAD
The State Government would procure about 70 lakh tonnes of paddy this Rabi (2024-25) season including fine varieties with an additional support of ₹500 per quintal as bonus out of the estimated production of 127.5 lakh tonnes, Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated here on Saturday.
This follows procurement of about 66.7 lakh tonnes during the Kharif season out of an estimated production of 153.5 lakh tonnes. Paddy was cultivated in over 65.49 lakh acres in Kharif, while it is cultivated in nearly 58.73 lakh acres this Rabi season.
With an estimated production of about 281 lakh tonnes in the two crop seasons of 2024-25, Telangana had become the top paddy producing State in the country, the minister said while reviewing the arrangements being made for the Rabi paddy procurement.
Speaking to the District Collectors through a video conference, Mr. Uttam Reddy cautioned officials to remain alert as unseasonal rains were being reported from several districts. Such weather fluctuations could damage harvested or standing paddy, if not procured swiftly, he said.
As of April 18, about 8.51 lakh tonnes of paddy had arrived at procurement centres and 5.77 lakh tonnes of it had already been purchased. It included 3.79 lakh tonnes of fine (`sanna’) varieties and 1.98 lakh tonnes of coarse (`doddu’) varieties. A total of 63,887 farmers benefited and payment including bonus was under process.
The government had proposed to open 8,329 paddy procurement centres (PPCs) and 7,337 of which were opened already. Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Nalgonda and Siddipet districts had operationalised all PPCs planned.
