It's a true snow day today: All London District Catholic School Board and Thames Valley District School Board schools are closed on Thursday as up to 60 cm of snow is forecast to fall by Friday morning.
After a week of blustery weather, there's no sign that things are slowing down: another 15 to 30 cm of snow is forecast to fall on Thursday, with up to 60 cm falling by Friday morning, Environment Canada said.
The weather agency has also issued a snow squall warning for the region.
"Several bands of snow squalls from Lake Huron will affect the region today through tonight. Locally higher snowfall accumulations exceeding 60 cm are possible especially if a single strong snow squall locks in for a few hours or more beginning Thursday morning," officials said.
"Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations."
Snow will be falling at rates of 5 cm to 10 cm per hour, with strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h.
Western University also announced all on-campus classes and exams will be cancelled Thursday.
In a social media post Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said a section of Highway 401 has been closed Thursday morning between Furnival Road and Currie Road in Elgin County, due to poor weather and driving conditions. Officers are on the scene.
Highway 402 is closed at Nauvoo Road Eastbound for Highway 401 in London due to blowing snow and zero visibility.
At the London airport, the remainder of flights departing to and arriving from Toronto have been cancelled.
The Strathroy and London offices of the Middlesex-London Health Unit are closed as well. In a statement medical officer of health Dr. Alex Summers said the decision was made out of "an abundance of caution." All appointments are cancelled and will be rescheduled.
