Foiled attempt to murder BJP leader Sita Soren by former assistant; accused arrested in Jharkhand.

An attempt to murder the BJP leader and former MLA Sita Soren was foiled by her security guards in Jharkhand‘s Dhanbad district, the police said.

The incident took place late on Thursday (March 7, 2025) at a hotel where she was attending a wedding ceremony. The accused, Debashis Manoranjan Ghosh, was arrested.

As per a police complaint, Ms. Soren was staying at the hotel to attend the wedding. When she returned to her room after the function, the accused, a former personal assistant, was waiting for her in her room and pointed a pistol at her before her guards intervened.

Nutan Modi, Saraidhela police station in-charge, said a case was registered on the complaint of Ms. Soren and investigation was under way. The police also recovered two pistols from Mr. Ghose, who was produced in a Dhanbad court on Friday, before being sent to judicial custody.

According to sources, Ms. Soren and Mr. Ghosh had a dispute over misuse of funds meant for the Jharkhand Assembly election held in November 2024, over which she sacked him.

Personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and State police were deployed for the security of Ms. Soren after the incident, which also raised questions on the state of security provided to political leaders.

The police also questioned the hotel staff as without their involvement, the accused would not have managed to gain entry into her room before her arrival.
