Tamil Nadu Vivasayeegal Sangam, affiliated to the AIKS, has appealed to the district administration to stabilise the price of shallot.
In a petition submitted at the weekly grievances redress meeting on Monday, association president Su. Palanisamy said farmers in Thondamuthur, Kandappalayam, Melchithirai Chavadi, Vedapatti, Devarayapuram, Thennamanallur and other places cultivated shallot on over 24,000 acres.
The cost of cultivation worked out to ₹70,000 to ₹75,000 an acre. For the past two years, the price of shallot was going down and now for the past couple of months it was between ₹8 and ₹12 a kg. Keeping in mind the shallot farmers’ welfare, the Central and State governments should announce minimum support price and also directly procure shallot at ₹50 a kg from farmers.
Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Tamil Desiya Viduthalai Iyakam, Adi Tamilar Peravai and a host of other outfits on Monday petitioned the district administration seeking action against a private hospital in Sundarapuram and a Sub-Inspector attached to the Podanur police station.
In a joint petition, the outfits alleged that the hospital had tried to cover up the death of Udumalpet resident S. Sathyabama, who was admitted with a negative COVID-19 status in April 2021 but was reported COVID-19 positive at the time of death in May that year.
Without even showing Sathyabama’s body to her family, the hospital had completed cremation. When Sathyabama’s daughter Praveena had lodged a complaint with the Podanur police against the hospital, the police took steps only to broker a truce.
On several occasion, the police only tried to persuade Ms. Praveena to accept money from the hospital, the outfits alleged and sought a thorough probe and action against the hospital and the SI, who attempted to broker a deal.
