Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas turns 19 today, July 12. Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Devdas is a love saga set in Bengal in the 1900s. 

In 2002, Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to create a magnum opus with Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Devdas, and he left no stone unturned to create a visual masterpiece. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles of Devdas, Parvati and Chandramukhi, respectively, the film was made on a huge budget of Rs 50 crore, a first for its time. The magnificent sets, the intricately designed costumes, the brilliant performances by the actors, the lighting, the music and the choreography of songs like Dola Re Dola might still take you by surprise with its grandiose.
