In 2002, Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to create a magnum opus with Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Devdas, and he left no stone unturned to create a visual masterpiece. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles of Devdas, Parvati and Chandramukhi, respectively, the film was made on a huge budget of Rs 50 crore, a first for its time.
