Seven European Union countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain have called on their citizens to refrain from joining the Ukrainian military against Russia in a statement issued by the countries' justice ministers.
A statement published by the Belgian Ministry of Justice after the meeting of the Vendome Group said that they "have unanimously discouraged Europeans from joining" the ranks of voluntary fighters heading to the war in Ukraine.
The Vendome Group includes the justice ministers of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, and Belgium.
"We obviously discourage people to travel to a war zone," said French interior minister Gerald Darmanin after a meeting with his European counterparts in Brussels.
