AgenciesLondonA heroic performance from the Indian bowlers helped the visitors seal a 151-run victory against England at Lord’s on Monday to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.Set with a target of 272 for a win, the hosts were bowled out for 120 in 51.5 overs. If Mohammad Shami (56* and 1/13) and Jasprit Bumrah excelled with both the bat and ball (3/33 and 34*), Mohammed Siraj stood out with his bowling once again (4/32).An 89-run 9th wicket partnership between Shami and Bumrah (34*) set the match and swung the momentum in India’s favour from a position wherein the hosts were looked favourites.India captain Virat Kohli decided to declare the innings an over and a half after lunch, setting England a target of 272 to chase in 60 possible overs.Bumrah struck in the very first over in England’s second innings to send Rory Burns packing and that was the beginning of what turned out to be one of the best shows of fast bowling from the Indian team in recent times. While Siraj and Bumrah were the leaders, Ishant Sharma (2/13) and Shami (1/13) provided the right support. Having lost 4 wickets in the second session, England’s score read 67/4 after 22 overs at the tea interval, still needing to bat 38 overs in the final session to save the match. Jos Buttler (25) did try to fight a battle after skipper Joe Root departed for 33, but in vain. Ollie Robinson (9* off 35 balls) hung on with Buttler but with Siraj removing wicket-keeper bat Buttler, it was all over for the hosts.Earlier, Haseeb Hameed stuck around for a patient knock of 9 before he was trapped in front of the stumps by Ishant Sharma in his very first over. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow then steadied the ship for the hosts, before Kohli successfully reviewed an lbw call on the final delivery before tea, as Ishant dismissed Bairstow for 2. India started the final session on top as Root perished against Bumrah for 33 as the visitors sniffed a victory. England could have been in even more trouble, but Kohli dropped Buttler on 2 off the bowling of Bumrah. Buttler joined by Moeen Ali on the crease, then adopted a defence-first approach, as the Indian bowlers tried to achieve another breakthrough to have a crack at the English tail. India had resumed play on day four at 181/6 with Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma at the crease. The onus was always going to be on Pant to extend the overnight lead of 154 but Ollie Robinson struck in the fourth over of the day, inducing an edge off a ball going across the southpaw. Four overs later, Robinson trapped Ishant Sharma in front of the stumps before Shami and Bumrah came together.Bumrah faced some chin music and a few verbal volleys but managed to keep the scoreboard ticking, albeit with the help of a few edges going to the boundary. Shami on the other hand went after the bowling, throwing his bat whenever he got a chance and soon brought up his second Test fifty with a six off Moeen Ali. India went into lunch at 286/8 with a lead of 259.ScoreboardIndia (1st Innings): 364England (1st Innings): 391India (2nd Innings)KL Rahul c Buttler b Wood 5Rohit Sharma c Ali b Wood 21Cheteshwar Pujara c Root b Wood 45Virat Kohli c Buttler b Curran 20Ajinkya Rahane c Buttler b Ali 61Rishabh Pant c Buttler b Robinson 22Ravindra Jadeja b Ali 3Ishant Sharma lbw Robinson 16 Mohammed Shami Not Out 56 Jasprit Bumrah Not Out 34 ExtrascTypeface:> 2b 12lb 1nb 0pen 0w 15 TotalcTypeface:> (109.3 overs, 8 wkts dec.) 298Bowling: James Anderson 25.3-6-53-0, Ollie Robinson 17-6-45-2 (1nb), Mark Wood 18-4-51-3, Sam Curran 18-3-42-1, Moeen Ali 26-1-84-2, Joe Root 5-0-9-0England (2nd innings; Target 272)Rory Burns c Siraj b Bumrah 0Dominic Sibley c Pant b Shami 0Haseeb Hameed lbw I Sharma 9Joe Root c Kohli b Jasprit Bumrah 33Jonny Bairstow lbw I Sharma 2Jos Buttler c Pant b Siraj 25Moeen Ali c Kohli b Siraj 13Sam Curran c Pant b Siraj 0Ollie Robinson lbw Bumrah 9Mark Wood Not Out 0James Anderson b Siraj 0ExtrascTypeface:> 17b, 7lb, 4nb, 0pen, 1w 29Total: (All Out in 51.5 overs) 120Bowling: Jasprit Bumrah 15-3-33-3 (2nb), Mohammed Shami 10-5-13-1 (1nb), Ravindra Jadeja 6-3-5-0 (1nb), Mohammed Siraj 10.5-3-32-4 (1w), Ishant Sharma 10-3-13-2.Toss: England.Result: India win by 151 runs go 1-0 in five-match series.Man of the Match: KL Rahul (India)
