Rise and fall of Varun Gandhi, the Nehru-Gandhi scion in BJP
India Today
Varun Gandhi’s rise in the BJP was swift when Rajnath Singh was at the helm of affairs. Rajnath Singh was the BJP president when Varun Gandhi contested his first Lok Sabha election in 2009.
Varun Gandhi, a Nehru-Gandhi scion in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faces an uncertain future in the party. Having emerged as one of the chief ministerial faces ahead of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, Varun Gandhi subsequently fell out of favour of the BJP’s central leadership.
His ouster from the 80-member BJP national executive is being linked to his Twitter posts calling for fixing accountability and bringing the culprits to justice in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. Eight people, including four farmers, lost their lives in the incident in which vehicles linked to Union minister Ajay Misra Teni rammed a crowd of protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri.
