Rhode Island lawmaker argues dress code is 'oppressive,' calls Senate a 'White western space'

The Rhode Island Senate on Tuesday passed attire guidelines that sparked an uproar for allegedly imposing standards that were biased toward White people.
Sen. Jonathon Acosta, D-District 16, argued that legislators' varying backgrounds were affected by an "ethno-racial-class nexus" and informed what they considered to be appropriate dress. "The frame that you bring to decorum might be different than the one that I bring for decorum, but does not make mine any less valuable," he said before suggesting authors whom he said could explain "why this type of rule is so oppressive." He added that the committee was changing the rules in a way that worsened the power dynamic in the legislature because it gave more power to a White Senate president.More Related News
