Republicans say state legislative pickups this week in Virginia and New Jersey will serve as a guide to the bigger elections ahead in 2022
Republican Glenn Youngkin's defeat of former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe in Virginia's closely watched gubernatorial election, along with victories for lieutenant governor and attorney general in a state President Biden carried by 10 points just a year ago and where the GOP hadn’t won statewide in a dozen years, captured national headlines.
Those wins overshadowed the GOP's down-ballot success, where the Republicans flipped seven seats in Virginia's House of Delegates, regaining the majority in the chamber they lost in the 2019 elections. Republicans will now hold a 52-48 advantage in the House of Delegates.
