TORONTO – Scottie Barnes had 21 points and nine rebounds and Gary Trent Jr., added 19 points and a game-saving defensive play as the Toronto Raptors hung on for a 110-109 win over the Orlando Magic on Friday night at Scotiabank Arena.
The Magic inbounded the ball with five seconds left but Trent knocked it into the Orlando backcourt. Cole Anthony retrieved it and his heave from the mid-court line was off the mark.
Fred VanVleet had 19 points and six assists for the Raptors, who split their four-game homestand. OG Anunoby chipped in with 16 points.
Anthony scored 24 points for the Magic, one of six Orlando players to hit double figures in scoring. Jalen Suggs had 21 points and Wendell Carter Jr., had 17.
A three-point play from VanVleet gave Toronto (3-3) an eight-point lead with 4:18 to play. However, the Magic continued to use their deep shooting — Orlando hit 16 three-pointers in the game — to keep things close.
VanVleet hit two three-pointers of his own late in the quarter, the latter coming at 2:04 to give Toronto a 12-point lead, its largest of the game.
A four-point play from Suggs with 52 seconds left after an Anunoby foul cut Toronto’s lead to four. Franz Wagner hit a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to make it a one-point game.
It was Toronto’s ninth straight win over the Magic, a streak that dates back to Feb. 24, 2019. The Magic (1-5) have dropped three games in a row.
