As the Congress prepares to hold the long-delayed election for its presidential post, the party faces another crisis in Rajasthan. On Sunday, over 80 Congress MLAs tendered their resignation to the Assembly Speaker in protest over a possible move to make Sachin Pilot the next chief minister of the state.
The current crisis stems from Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's run for Congress president, owing to which he may have to relinquish his CM post in Rajasthan. Earlier, Gehlot had asserted that he would continue as the chief minister of Rajasthan even if he assumed the responsibility of Congress president. On Sunday, the Congress called a legislature party meeting in which the post of chief minister would have been discussed. Drama unfolded as Congress MLAs loyal to Ashok Gehlot did not attend the meeting and threatened to resign from the party.
The Congress has dispatched its observers and central leaders to the state to manage the situation. They are likely to return to Delhi to apprise the high command about the developments.
