Railways not spending enough money on passenger safety, allege CITU leaders

CITU leaders criticize Indian Railways for lack of spending on passenger safety, announce district-level awareness programs and protests.
Despite earning lakhs of crores like ₹2.4 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25, the Indian Railways is not spending at least ₹5,000 crore annually on passenger safety and train accident prevention measures, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) leaders alleged at a State-level meeting here on Saturday.
The leaders announced that the CITU will organise district-level programmes from May 15 to sensitise and create awareness among people about the current sorry state of affairs in the Indian Railways, including the government’s decisions and actions to privatise the railways.
CITU will organise district-level meetings from May 15 on issues like vacancies in the railways, problems of contract workers, safety condition of trains and tracks, health issues of railway employees, said CITU State secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar. CITU will collect opinions and signatures from passengers from June 1 to 9, he said, adding that it will hold dharnas at railway stations on June 10.
