Racist remarks by L.A. City Council president spark uproar
CBSN
Los Angeles City Council president Nury Martinez apologized Sunday for statements she says she made "in a moment of intense frustration and anger," while Councilmember Mike Bonin called for her removal as president and her resignation from office.
The comments Martinez was referring to stemmed from a conversation in or around October of 2021about the redistricting process -- a discussion that spanned about an hour, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The newspaper says Martinez, Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and L.A. County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera took part in the call, in which they also discussed Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas, who'd been indicted on federal corruption charges.
