Tribune News NetworkDohaQICCA Board Member for International Relations Dr Sheikh Thani bin Ali Al Thani inaugurated the panel discussions on the fourth World Conference on International Arbitration on Tuesday.Addressing the event, Sheikh Thani said that the conference is being held in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of issuing Law No. 2 of 2017 promulgating the Civil and Commercial Arbitration Law and the issuance of QICCA’s new rules for conciliation and arbitration, which is scheduled to be issued in April, affirming that they are corresponding with the latest international standards and trends and best practices in the field of international arbitration.Sheikh Thani said Qatar strived to establish an integrated system for international commercial arbitration, noting that Law No. (13) of 1990 about the Civil and Commercial Procedures is the first base that regulates arbitration in the State of Qatar, especially in Articles from 190-210.This was followed by the accession of the State of Qatar to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards 1958 in 2003, he said, the issuance of the amended version of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in 2006, and the adoption of the new version UNCITRAL Rules in 2010.In line of these developments, he said that Qatar issued the Arbitration Law in 2017.Underscoring the role played by QICCA, Sheikh Thani stressed that the Centre was the key partner and genuine driver of the arbitration process in the state through the services it provides in this field, pointing out that QICCA’s arbitration rules are included in a lot of contracts that are concluded in the state as a means of disputes settlement in full efficiency and quality.QICCA has become the first destination for arbitration in Qatar, he said, adding that it issued more than 40 arbitration cases with value of nearly QR2 billion in 2021.
