Doha, Qatar: As Qatar marks its National Day on December 18, Finnish Ambassador to Qatar H E Juha Mustonen described the occasion as a powerful reflection of unity, pride, and shared identity, resonating deeply with both citizens and residents of the country.

Commemorating the founding of the State of Qatar by Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani in 1878, the National Day, Ambassador Mustonen said, is “a cherished occasion that reflects the deep sense of unity, pride, and belonging shared by the Qatari people.”

Beyond celebration, he noted, it carries a lasting message for younger generations, reminding them of the values and principles upon which the nation was built and honouring the efforts of those who laid its foundations. Through vibrant celebrations and meaningful activities, the day reinforces national solidarity and expresses gratitude for the collective contributions that continue to shape Qatar’s future.

The Ambassador also highlighted Qatar’s growing stature on the global stage, particularly its role as a mediator and advocate for peace. Thanks to what he described as an “active and principled foreign policy,” Qatar has earned international respect as a fair and trustworthy partner in diplomacy. “By prioritizing dialogue over traditional power dynamics, Qatar has built a reputation as an effective mediator,” he said, stressing that its approach is based on voluntariness and respect for the ownership of solutions by the parties involved.

Doha’s hosting of peace talks across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas, alongside its continued support for Palestinian-Israeli dialogue, reflects this commitment. Ambassador Mustonen also pointed to Qatar’s humanitarian contributions, including aid to Ukraine, as evidence of its ethical approach to global stability. He described Qatar’s inclusive mediation model engaging governments, civil society, and vulnerable communities, as one that addresses the root causes of conflict and promotes sustainable peace. Through partnerships with Finland and other Nordic countries, Qatar has further strengthened its role, sharing expertise and investing long-term in diplomatic capacity, effectively becoming a “capital of mediation.”
