Tribune News NetworkDohaQatarâs athletes and officials departed for Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday to participate in the 32nd Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Tokyo 2020 will be State of Qatarâs 10th consecutive participation at the Olympics since it first took part in the 1984 Los Angeles Games and since. Qatarâs first Olympic medal was clinched by Mohamed Suleiman in 1500m at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 2000 Sydney Olympics, Said Saif Asaad claimed Qatarâs second Olympic medal when he took bronze in the 105kg weightlifting event. Qatari sport continued to make a big leap claiming two bronze medals at the London 2012 Olympics where shooter Nasser al Attiyah won bronze in menâs skeet event while high jump world champion Mutaz Barshim also won the bronze medal. But this was followed by a historic silver medal by Barshim at the 2016 Rio Olympics. A total of 38 athletes, 36 men and 2 women, were selected then to the Qatari team across ten different sports including Qatar national handball team, which won silver at the 2015 Menâs World Championships in Doha. At Tokyo 2020, Qatar will be represented by 15 athletes.More Related News
