Aggrieved teachers in West Bengal protest for segregation of tainted and untainted candidates, demanding justice and transparency.
Aggrieved teachers of West Bengal have continued their protests across the State, even after the Supreme Court on April 17 allowed untainted teaching candidates to continue working until the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) completes fresh recruitments by December 31.
On Saturday (April 19, 2025), aggrieved, untainted teachers carried out protest rallies across several districts in West Bengal, reiterating their demands for the segregation of tainted and untainted candidates. In the Esplanade area of Central Kolkata, a group of protesting teachers is continuing their ongoing sit-in demonstration.
The Supreme Court on April 3 this year rendered the entire recruitment panel by the SSC in 2016 null and void owing to “egregious violations and illegalities, which violated Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution.”
That resulted in the loss of employment for over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in State-run schools, leading to widespread agitations across West Bengal. The protestors’ primary demand was the segregation of untainted and tainted candidates from the panel of job appointments.
On Friday (April 18, 2025), Education Minister Bratya Basu hinted at the likelihood of the school service commission publishing a list of terminated teaching and non-teaching staff on Monday, April 21, marking them as either “tainted” or “not specifically tainted”.
“So far, we have heard many promises. But we do not trust verbal reassurances and empty promises anymore. We will not stop our agitations till we see the segregated list with our own eyes. Once the list is given to us, we will decide our future course of action,” Mehboob Mondal, the spokesperson of the ‘Deserving Teachers’ Rights Forum’, told The Hindu on Saturday.
He added that the Supreme Court’s recent order for untainted candidates to continue working till fresh recruitments also does not offer them much reassurance till the list of tainted and untainted candidates is published.
