A small group of people returned to Parliament Hill Sunday morning for a second day of the "Freedom Convoy" protest against COVID-19 mandates and public health restrictions.
Trucks and vehicles remained parked in downtown Ottawa overnight and into the morning, but the crowd on Parliament Hill was smaller at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday compared to the same time on Saturday. Organizers of the demonstration said there would be a prayer service on the hill at 11 a.m.
The sounds of truck horns could be heard through the downtown area for a second straight morning, with some residents complaining horns and fireworks kept them up through the night. Trucks are parked throughout the Centretown and Byward Market areas.
Ottawa police spokesperson Const. Amy Gagnon told Newstalk 580 CFRA that police are preparing for a crowd of about the same size as Saturday. Gagnon could not provide a definitive estimate of Saturday’s crowd but said it was in the “thousands.”
The "Freedom Convoy" protest has seen thousands of truck drivers and their supporters fill Parliament Hill and streets in downtown Ottawa, denouncing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and calling for an end to the restrictions 22 months into the pandemic.
