Protesters in Nagapattinam demand improved workers' welfare and health services, highlighting urgent needs for support staff and ambulance upgrades.
Members of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam women’s wing and 108 Ambulance Workers’ Union staged a demonstration at Abirami Grounds in Nagapattinam on Wednesday, pressing a series of demands related to workers’ welfare and public health services.
The protest was led by district women’s wing coordinator Suganya Mukundan. District secretary Sukumaran, ambulance workers’ union State president Sivakumar, State treasurer Saminathan, and State general secretary Rajendran participated and addressed the gathering.
Protesters urged the authorities to grant weekly holidays with pay to support staff at Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital and to provide safe changing facilities for women workers. They also demanded that support staff be paid the full wages fixed by the District Collector without deductions.
Among other demands were the immediate replacement of outdated 108 ambulances, provision of maternal and child welfare vehicles to upgraded primary health centres in the district, and ensuring free mortuary services in government hospitals.
Raising slogans, the demonstrators called for swift action from the government to address their grievances. District policy propagation organiser Nagoor Ahmed proposed a vote of thanks at the end of the protest.

Bulrushes in wetlands are not encroachments, but ‘legal homes’ to birds in the crake and rail family and warblers, so government line agencies ought to tread on them thoughtfully
