Chelsea on Friday announced that they completed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion. The Spanish defender has joined Thomas Tuchel's side on a six-year deal.
Cucurella enjoyed a fine debut season with Brighton during the last campaign and made 38 appearances for the club in all competitions. He also scored one goal, which was against Manchester United.
The Spanish defender's fruitful campaign saw him being voted as the Player of the Season by both Brighton supporters and teammates. A few weeks ago, Manchester City were considered to be the frontrunners for the signature of the 24-year-old, but Chelsea were able to trump them and land their man.
After joining the Blues, Cucurella opened up on his happiness over completing the move on the club's official website. He said that joining Chelsea was a big opportunity and he would be working hard to help the team achieve its goals.
"I’m really happy. It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team," said Cucurella.
Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly also expressed his happiness at getting Cucurella.
"Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season. We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea," said Boehly.
