Police watchdog investigating after 37-year-old man shot by Halifax police

A police officer shot a man on Quinpool Road after he allegedly threatened them with a knife, Halifax Regional Police said in a news release.
The 37-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, police said.
At 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation store at 1616 Grafton Street while a robbery was ongoing. According to police, staff there reported that as the man was leaving the store, he sprayed a sensory irritant.
Forty minutes later, officers received a second report of another robbery, this time at the NSLC at 6169 Quinpool Road. Police say staff there also said the man sprayed a sensory irritant.
From there, police located the man on Quinpool Road and the man allegedly threatened police with a large knife, according to the release. Multiple police cars were seen on site.
Police said an officer deployed a taser and then a second officer drew his weapon and shot the man.
The Serious Incident Response Team, an independent police watchdog, is investigating the case.
Halifax Regional Police did not immediately respond to a CBC News request for more details.
