A new patent filed by Sony is doing the rounds on the internet, suggesting that an extended backward compatibility may soon be arriving to the PS5. Here is how it will help PlayStation gamers enjoy titles from the past once again.
Sony has equipped the PlayStation 5 with some level of backward compatibility. To the extent that you can play many PlayStation 4 titles on the latest console. This still falls short of what its biggest competitor Xbox is providing though. Microsoft's Xbox series X and series S let players play any game from any of the previous versions. It now seems like Sony is planning to fill this gap.
A new patent filed by Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect for PS4 and PS5, describes a way to bring backward compatibility to PlayStation 5 in a whole new way. Filed earlier this month with The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the patent mentions the use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control for running older PlayStation games on the PS5.
