To commemorate Remembrance Day and reflect on the sacrifices of those who've served, ceremonies are planned in Hamilton, Burlington and Brantford.
The federal holiday on Nov. 11 also means most federal services are closed, along with businesses that are federally regulated such as banks and postal service.
Here's some of what local cities have planned leading up to and on Nov. 11.
Indigenous Veteran’s Day
An event to commemorate Indigenous Veteran’s Day will take place at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 7, at Battlefield House Museum and Park, 77 King St. W., Stoney Creek.
“This service acknowledges and commemorates the contributions made by Indigenous veterans in service to Turtle Island,” the City of Hamilton said in a news release.
The event at the Eagles Among Us Indigenous Monument will be followed by light refreshments and snacks “with an Indigenous flavour,” the city says.
The city asks that people bring their own chairs as seating is limited.
Garrison parade
The city’s garrison parade will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, with a service at 10:45 a.m.
The parade of Hamilton veterans, garrison units and cadet corps will start at the John Foote V.C. Armouries at 200 James St. N., and continue south to Gore Park on King Street E.
The service will take place at Gore Park’s Veteran’s Place.
To accommodate the parade, King Street E. will be closed from Catharine Street N. to James Street N. from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Seating at the cenotaph will no longer be available once the parade arrives, the city says.
