Pakistan NSC authorises armed forces to take ‘corresponding actions’

NSC authorizes Pakistani armed forces to respond to India's strikes, claiming violation of sovereignty and casualties.

Calling India’s strikes on nine targets across the Line of Control and the International boundary a “violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty”, the National Security Committee (NSC) on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) said they had authorised the Pakistani armed forces to take “corresponding actions”.

The NSC meeting was convened by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hours after the strikes, and the participants were apprised of the casualties and damage to property in the country.

According to a statement issued by Mr. Sharif’s office, the Pakistan armed forces claimed that they had mounted a response to India’s actions early on Wednesday morning, even claiming that they had brought down “five Indian fighter aircrafts and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)”. However, the statement did not offer any evidence of the claim, which has not been confirmed in India.

“In consonance with Article-51 of the UN Charter, Pakistan reserves the right to respond, in self-defence, at a time, place, and manner of its choosing to avenge the loss of innocent Pakistani lives and blatant violation of its sovereignty,” the statement read.

Along with the deaths, the Pakistani PMO claimed that “civilian infrastructure including mosques” had been damaged, and accused the strikes of endangering commercial airline planes belonging to Gulf countries. The statement added that the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project south of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) had been targeted as well.
