Officials report three active forest fires in the northeast region

There is one new forest fire in the northeast region, Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fires and Emergency Services reported Tuesday, bringing the number of active fires in the region to three.

The new fire, Sudbury 1, measures 4.5 hectares and is not yet under control. The fire is located on the northeastern point of Manitoulin Island about eight kilometres south of Whitefish Falls off Highway 6.
Two other fires are being held in the region. Bancroft 2, which started May 15, measures 8.8 hectares, is located on the east side of Black Lake and is about 10 kilometres north of Norland.
Sault Ste. Marie 1, which started May 15, measures 9 hectares and is being held. The fire is located about 0.5 kilometres south of Garden Lake, or about 15.5 kilometres southwest of Ranger Lake.
“The Northeast Region is showing high hazard for areas from Sault Ste. Marie north to Lake Superior Provincial Park and east to Sudbury,” officials said in their daily forest fire update.
“Areas along Georgian Bay and going east from Parry Sound through Bracebridge, Kawartha Lakes, Bancroft and the Renfrew areas are also showing high hazard. Areas north of Sudbury, including North Bay, Pembroke, and Temiskaming Shores are showing low to moderate hazards.”
