Nurses, who were appointed on ad-hoc basis during the time of Covid, staged a protest against the Tamil Nadu government for falling back on the promise of regularisation of jobs.
Hundreds of nurses gathered at the memorial of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) founder CN Annadurai and Karunanidhi in Chennai to stage protests against the government, demanding regularisation of jobs.
Through the Medical Recruitment Board, the Tamil Nadu government employed around 3,290 nurses during the Covid pandemic in 2020. Though they were promised to be taken under a contract basis, the nurses were employed on ‘Ad-hoc basis’, with government extending their employment every six months.
DMK government led by MK Stalin had assured around 2472 nurses that their employment would soon be made under a contract basis and for the rest 818 nurses, positing would be allocated as per requirement.

However, on March 31, the state terminated the employment of 818 nurses citing a fund crunch. On Monday around 3,290 nurses gathered at the memorials of two DMK stalwarts, Annadurai and Kalaignar Karunanidhi, protesting against the false promise and demanding job security for all nurses hired on ad-hoc basis.
Some nurses who gathered near the DMK office were detained by police even before they could initiate a protest, forcing the rest of the nurses to hold the protest at the memorial.
