New wooden car to be made for Rockfort temple at Tiruchi

A new 29-foot wooden temple car for Rockfort temple in Tiruchi will be inaugurated soon, replacing the old one.

A new wooden car is to be made for the Rockfort Arulmigu Thayumanaswamy temple at Tiruchi. The new ‘Ambal Ther’ (temple car) will replace the existing one which has become old, said temple authorities. 

A formal inauguration to mark the launch of the temple car making work is scheduled on Friday. The new car for Goddess Mattuvar Kuzhalammai is to be made with donor contribution at an estimated cost of ₹57.8 lakh. 

Logs have been readied by the ‘sthapathi’ for making the temple car. An official said the new car would be 29-foot tall while its width would be 13 feet.

The work will commence following the formal inauguration to mark its launch, said temple authorities. The new car is expected to be ready by April coinciding with the annual Chithirai festival.  The centuries-old temple has two cars — “Swami Ther” and the other being “Ambal Ther”. Situated in the heart of the city, the temple has separate sannadhis for Lord Manicka Vinayagar, Lord Thayumanaswamy, Goddess ‘Mattuvar Kuzhalammai’, and Lord ‘Uchi Pillaiyar atop the hillock.
