Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts to seek appointment to Senate after Ben Sasse retires
Fox News
Nebraska Republican Governor Pete Ricketts on Tuesday tossed his hat into the ring to be appointed as the state's next U.S. Senator, following Sen. Ben Sasse's retirement.
"This decision is the result of many hours of prayer and family discussions," Ricketts said in a statement, according to KETV. "For me, it came down to a single question: How can I best serve the people of Nebraska and advance our conservative values? In Congress, we’re in a fight for the future of our nation, and it’s a fight we have to win. We must cut taxes, strengthen public safety and our national security, and protect our most sacred freedoms." Chris Pandolfo is a writer for Fox News Digital. Sasse is leaving the Senate to pursue a new opportunity as president of the University of Florida. Despite opposition from left-wing students and faculty members, Sasse, formerly president of Midland University in Freemont, Nebraska, was confirmed as the school's next president on Nov. 9. He will formally resign from the Senate on Jan. 8 after completing the current session of Congress.
