Forecasts for a treacherous mix of snow and ice has put more than 20 million people under winter weather alerts from Texas to the Carolinas.
The double-whammy threat prompted the governors of North and South Carolina and Virginia to issue states of emergency. Overall, the alerts cover a wide swathe that includes southern Texas, southern Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, western Florida, Virginia and the Carolinas.
Several school districts in the Carolinas decided to move to virtual learning on Friday and canceled activities in anticipation of the ice-snow storm, CNN affiliate WYFF reported. Some districts cited low temperatures and icy roads that could make traveling unsafe.

More than two decades ago, on January 24, 2004, I landed in Baghdad as a legal adviser, assigned an office in what was then known as the Green Zone. It was raining and cold, and my duffle bag was thrown into a puddle off the C-130 aircraft that had just done a corkscrew dive to reach the runway without risk of ground fire. Young American soldiers greeted me as we piled into a vehicle, sped out of the airport complex and then along a road called the “Highway of Death” due to car bombs and snipers.
