More shark sightings closed New York beaches on Wednesday after previous spottings and a potential shark attack forced the state to take action.
"Due to a recent shark sighting off Atlantic Beach, the Town of Hempstead is prohibiting beachgoers from swimming/bathing in the ocean at township operated beaches," the town wrote in a Facebook post. Newsday reported that Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin Jr. later explained that the decision was made due to the presence of two blacktip sharks spotted approximately 20 yards offshore shortly before 1 p.m. ET and that swimming was limited to knee-deep and waist-deep activity for the rest of the day.More Related News
