The Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Ernakulam, has installed a urine toxicology analyser machine capable of dispensing test results on potential cardiac arrest and substance abuse in a matter of just 15 minutes, in its casualty wing.
The machine is capable of conducting cardiac enzyme test and drug panel test. These tests will be done free of cost for families belonging to below the poverty line. Substance abuse can also detected by testing urine using this machine.
In fact, using a urine sample, the presence of nine types of drugs — amphetamines, methamphetamine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone metabolite, opiates, cannabinoids, and tricyclic antidepressants — can be detected by this test.
