Sen. Mitch McConnell is locked in a proxy war with former President Donald Trump this fall as both Republicans work to position candidates for primaries taking place all over the country next spring and summer.
But with control of the Senate on the line, McConnell is very carefully choosing his battles with Trump -- still the head of the party and clearly its most dominant voice. The two Republicans are aligned on some Senate races and at odds in others -- most acutely in Georgia, where McConnell had hoped the legendary football star Herschel Walker would decline to run.
