
Mark Vientos proving himself as Mets’ new third basemen after Brett Baty demotion

Perhaps Mark Vientos is breaking out.
Perhaps Vientos is staking his claim as the Mets’ bona fide third baseman.
Perhaps Vientos is en route to fulfilling his promising potential and high expectations bestowed upon him.
Or perhaps not.
But it’s a start, and the 24-year-old is beginning to stack encouraging performances together.
Vientos was the only bright spot during the Mets’ 10-5 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field, smacking a solo home run in the fifth inning and adding an infield single in the ninth.

SAN DIEGO — As you may have seen elsewhere in this newspaper (and also if you haven’t deleted me yet from your social media), I have a book coming out Tuesday called “The Bosses of The Bronx.” Much of it details the 37 years’ worth of antics, winning, losing, winning again and overall mania of George Steinbrenner’s time with the Yankees.

Cade Cunningham, almost inarguably the best player in the East this season, is likely out for the remainder of the regular season. That’s the word out of Detroit following the depressing news that Cunningham punctured a lung when he took a knee to his side Tuesday from Washington’s Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.
