Maine voters reject $10 billion Hydro-Quebec deal in referendum upset

Maine voters delivered a big blow to Hydro-Quebec and Quebecers, to the tune of $10 billion, when they rejected a power transmission line through their state in a referendum Tuesday.
A proposed power line would carry Quebec-made hydropower to Massachusetts, with that multi-billion-dollar price tag attached, but it needs to pass through Maine to get there.
The line is already under construction, but in a referendum Maine voters nixed the project.
By 10:45, 77 per cent of the vote was reported, with the "no" vote winning at about 59 per cent and making a yes vote impossible, according to live results published by the Bangor Daily News.
One environmental group, the Natural Resources Council of Maine, called that a decisive victory and "a strong majority" on Tuesday evening, demanding an immediate halt to the project.
