A 29-year-old London man is facing several charges after police allege he sexually assaulted a teenage girl he picked up as a passenger while driving for a ride-hailing service.
According to investigators, the teen had ordered a ride through an unspecified app around 2 p.m. on June 1, 2025 near Dundas Street and Adelaide Street.
Police allege the driver diverted from the route, and took the girl to a parking lot near Deveron Crescent and Commissioners Road East and sexually assaulted her. The teen was then taken to her home, police said, adding she was not physically hurt.
Officers were contacted and, through the investigation, identified the suspect as a 29-year-old London man who, police say, turned himself in on Feb. 10.
The accused is charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching under 16, and sexual interference with a person under 16, police said.
He was released from custody with a court date; however, police say he was rearrested on Feb. 23 after he was found driving under a fake name on a ride-hailing service, in violation of his release conditions.
He faces one count each of failing to comply with an undertaking and fraudulent concealment and will appear in court on March 19, police said.
While London police did not state which ride-hailing service the accused was driving for, Uber confirmed to CBC News that it was their platform.
"This reprehensible behaviour has no place on the Uber platform. We are deeply committed to the safety of our communities, and we take reports like this very seriously," an Uber spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
"We have banned all accounts related to this driver and are supporting law enforcement with their investigation."
Lyft confirmed the incident did not involve their service and added that "the driver is no longer active on the platform."
Police said their investigation continues, and ask that anyone with information come forward to them or Crime Stoppers.
"The London Police Service reminds the public to verify vehicle and driver information when using ride‑share services," they said in a statement.
"Riders are encouraged to use verified platforms, confirm driver details, share trips with a trusted person, sit in the back seat when possible, and trust their instincts."
