The Department of Medical Education has relieved Dr. H.C. Lokesh from the post of District Surgeon of Sri Chamarajendra Hospital which is attached to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, following allegations of harassing women staff.
The Hindu had carried reports on the complaints against him. Several women staff had complained to Ministers and senior officers of the Department of Medical Education and Department of Health and Family Welfare against him.
J. Kumaraswamy, Under Secretary, Department of Medical Education, issued an order on Saturday (November 30, 2024), relieving Dr. Lokesh from the additional charge of District Surgeon. He would continue as Associate Professor in the Department of General Medicine at HIMS.
“As he has been holding additional charge of District Surgeon it has been difficult for the smooth functioning of the Department of General Medicine. Further, as there had been complaints from the staff and the Karnataka State Women’s Commission and others against him, he has been relieved from the post of District Surgeon with immediate effect,” the order stated.
Dr. Lokesh was given the additional charge of District Surgeon on December 21, 2023, though he was suspended earlier following allegations of sexually harassing a house surgeon in January 2022.
He was reinstated in August 2022, as the complainant did not appear before the inquiry panel set up to probe the allegations.
After he took charge as District Surgeon, he allegedly misbehaved with the women staff on several occasions.
