Lion Electric says it had no choice but to temporarily lay off around 400 employees in both Canada and the United States, the company announced on Sunday.

The electric bus manufacturer will now have just 300 workers, it said in a statement on Sunday.
“[They] will focus on manufacturing, sales and delivery of buses, and will continue to help customers maintain their vehicles on the road.”
Manufacturing operations at the Joliet, Illinois plant will also be discontinued.
The company did not specify how many of these layoffs directly affected Quebec employees.
Lion Electric had already carried out three other waves of layoffs in 2024, involving nearly 520 jobs.
“The electrification of transport is currently experiencing difficulties, but it remains a sector of the future, and we need to find solutions to maintain and develop this expertise in Quebec,” said Éric Rancourt, the Quebec representative of the International Association of Machinists-Canada.
