Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh on Friday said that the work to redevelop the Kumbakonam Railway Station will commence by June- end.
Mr. Singh told presspersons at Kumbakonam that sanction has been accorded for complete renovation and redevelopment of Kumbakonam station at a cost of around ₹100 crore.
“We will do the bidding process now and by June-end the renovation work will start,” he said and added that it the work might be completed by December 2027. To a question, he said the Southern Railway would operate more special trains during summer.
Earlier, Mr. Singh reviewed the redevelopment plan for Kumbakonam station. K. Ravikumar, Chief Engineer (Construction), Southern Railway, presented the detailed redevelopment plan to the General Manager and held an in-depth discussion on the project’s scope and execution.
Mr. Singh conducted a comprehensive review of Villupuram, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, and Thanjavur railway stations where modernisation work under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme were under way. At Mayiladuthurai railway junction, Mr. Singh held a detailed discussion with the Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha member R. Sudha regarding the progress of the redevelopment work. He inspected the upgrades, including the portico, facade and parking areas.
The General Manager explained the quality of material used in the restructuring of buildings, pillars, and other infrastructure to the MP and assured her that the work was carried out meticulously. The Mayiladuthurai station is being modernised at a cost of ₹13.21 crore with 87% of work having been completed. The project is expected to be completed by April-end.
Mr. Singh reviewed the progress of the modernisation work carried out at the Thanjavur railway junction under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He inspected the station’s circulating area and the landscaping work. The Thanjavur station is being modernised at a cost of ₹13.85 crore with 83% of work having been completed. The project was expected to be completed by April.
