Vor dem Ukraine-Krieg herrschte zwischen Finnland und Russland ein reger Grenzverkehr. Kaum hatte Helsinki verkündet, der Nato beitreten zu wollen, drohte Moskau dem Land mit einem „neuen eisernen Vorhang“. Im finnischen Grenzort Vainikkala ist dieser bereits gefallen.
Der Bahnsteig Nummer 9 in Vainikkala ist leer. In der Nähe des kleinen Dorfes im Westen Finnlands überquert die Bahnverbindung zwischen der Hauptstadt Helsinki und der russischen Metropole St. Petersburg die Grenze. Es ist der letzte Halt des Hochgeschwindigkeitszugs Allegro, der jahrelang viermal täglich Hunderte von Fahrgästen in beide Richtungen beförderte. Heute steht er still. Im Bahnhofsrestaurant sind mehr Grenzbeamte als Reisende.
„Es ist ein Albtraum“, sagt Ville Laihia, der Sohn des Besitzers. „Wir haben 20 Jahre damit verbracht, dieses Geschäft aufzubauen, und jetzt kämpfen wir ums Überleben“. Sein Schicksal steht für etwas, das die Einheimischen hier schon seit Wochen, wenn nicht Monaten spüren: Finnlands Beziehung zu Russland ist am Tiefpunkt angekommen.
