Police officers in Karur district are reaching out to the public under the ‘Gramathai Nokki Kaavalthurai’ initiative to foster police-public relationship, widen the information network and ascertain the requirements of the villagers and address them.
The weekly programme organised every Saturday in a village is attended by officers from the rank of Inspector to Superintendent of Police. A range of issues are driven home to the villagers and make them feel free to approach the law enforcers to redress their grievances.
The initiative aimed at “reaching out to the unreached” also serves as a platform for the police officers to know the grassroot requirements of the public and liaise with the authorities concerned to address them early to avoid the issue from turning into a law and order problem.
Police officers have drawn up a schedule under the initiative to visit a village every Saturday where they sensitise public to the precautionary measures to be taken by them to thwart crimes, role of public in the maintenance of law and order, raise awareness among them on the hazards of using drugs besides insisting on communal harmony, the need to wear helmet while riding a two-wheeler, awareness of cyber crimes and on crimes against women and children, said Superintendent of Police, Karur, P. Sundaravadivel.
Besides, information relating to opportunities available for the educated youth in the government and private sector, ways through which students could enhance their latent skills, methods to face competitive examinations conducted by the government are also being put forth under the initiative. The mobile numbers of the police officers are being shared with the public for easy access.
About 40 to 50 villages have been covered so far under the initiative, said Mr. Sundaravadivel adding that constables serving at the station level frequently interact with the villagers.
The need to maintain communal harmony is being specifically emphasised at places where there are simmering problems, The interactive initiative is organised in the evening for nearly an hour. “Reaching out to the unreached is the whole idea behind the initiative, said Mr. Sundaravadivel.
