This is the third incident taking place in Karnataka, in the last month, over girl students wearing hijabs to schools or colleges. Here is a recap of all the incidents.
The first incident took place in the coastal town of Udupi on January 1, 2022.
The management of the government pre-university college barred six Muslim girls from attending classes for wearing hijab as the dress was against prescribed norms of the college.
One of the students has filed a petition in the HC. The writ petition, filed on behalf of the student Resham Farooq, said the students’ right to wear a hijab is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 14 and 25 of the Constitution and is an essential practice of Islam.
A meeting between students, parents, government officials and the school management was supposed to solve the issue of the Hijab row. According to those who attended the meeting that took place on Wednesday, January 19, no conclusion was reached.
The Karnataka government has set up an expert committee to resolve the issue. Until the committee recommendation comes, all girls have been asked to adhere to uniform rules.
