A 17-year-old driver is accused of travelling more than 50km/h over the speed limit on Highway 11 early Sunday morning, provincial police say.
On Dec. 31 at about 12:30 a.m., an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer stopped a vehicle they said was travelling 150km/h in a 90km/h zone on Highway 11 in Moonbeam Township.
“The officer didn’t even need to explain what the consequences were for driving 50 km/h plus over the speed limit – the sign (shown above) says it all,” police said on social media.
The teenage driver from Kapuskasing, Ont. was charged with stunt driving. Additionally, the teen received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days per provincial regulations.
Drivers in Ontario face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 and fines can increase to a maximum of $10,000, upon conviction.
OPP officials in northern Ontario have said stunt driving in the region is rising after a pandemic pause.
According to police, when asked about the incident the driver said they were “just heading home.”
