Texas State Representative Jake Ellzey has won the special election runoff in Texas' 6th district, The Associated Press projects. Ellzey will succeed the late Congressman Ron Wright, who died in February from COVID-19 complications.
Ellzey narrowly lost to Ron Wright in the 2018 GOP primary for the same seat. This time around, he was endorsed by Texas Congressman Dan Crenshaw and the former Texas Governor Rick Perry. Ellzey won over Wright's widow, Susan Wright, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Ellzey and Susan Wright were the top two vote getters in late April and advanced to a runoff, locking out any Democratic candidates in the open primary.Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
