Israel is facing a surge of pressure from aid groups, international human rights bodies and world leaders to end its nearly 22-month campaign of destruction in Gaza, which has resulted in the mass starvation of the territory’s Palestinian population.
In the past week, dozens of countries and more than 100 aid groups have released statements condemning the Israeli military’s indiscriminate attacks, including the daily massacres being carried out by soldiers and mercenaries at the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s aid sites. Israeli officials maintain their military is focused on eliminating Hamas, the Gaza-based militant group that carried out a deadly attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. About 50 hostages taken by Hamas at the time remain in captivity, roughly half of whom Israel believes are dead.
The U.S., which has been arming Israel in its obliteration of the Palestinian territory, has been working alongside Qatar in trying to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Both Israel and the U.S. have claimed Hamas is unwilling to agree to a ceasefire, while the militant group says it will agree to a truce if that includes a permanent end to the violence.
