How Violet T. Lewis Started A College With Just A $50 Loan

Violet T. Lewis bought several used typewriters, and started the Lewis Business College in Indiana in the midst of the Great Depression.
In the midst of the Great Depression, Violet T. Lewis founded a college designed for Black women seeking secretary skills. It's early graduates landed jobs as places like Ford, General Motors and Michigan Bell.
Violet and Stefeyne Ponders are Lewis' granddaughters.
"Her vision was a reality," Violet said. "The first Blacks you find in most of the major corporations in this area came from Lewis College of Business, or Lewis Business College at that point."
