How the Yankees’ offseason haul stacks up to their primary American League contenders
NY Post
Pitchers and catchers reporting to Florida and Arizona next week does not mean teams are done trying to get better.
As you will undoubtedly hear Brian Cashman say again this year, it’s not pencils down until the trade deadline.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t use the eve of camp as a marker to see how the Yankees’ offseason compared to the teams that will try to stand in their way of winning a second straight American League pennant.
The reigning World Series champion Dodgers were clearly head-and-shoulders above the rest of the league this offseason in terms of bringing in talent, though “winning” the offseason and $2.90 will get you a ride on the subway. And while the Yankees had to deal with the blow of losing Juan Soto to the Mets in December, they still found a way to pivot and potentially keep pace with the rest of the contenders in the AL – as Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projections, released earlier this week, had them tied with the Orioles for the most wins in the AL.

SAN DIEGO — As you may have seen elsewhere in this newspaper (and also if you haven’t deleted me yet from your social media), I have a book coming out Tuesday called “The Bosses of The Bronx.” Much of it details the 37 years’ worth of antics, winning, losing, winning again and overall mania of George Steinbrenner’s time with the Yankees.

Cade Cunningham, almost inarguably the best player in the East this season, is likely out for the remainder of the regular season. That’s the word out of Detroit following the depressing news that Cunningham punctured a lung when he took a knee to his side Tuesday from Washington’s Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.
